My friend Daniel moved here to live with his grandma Mildred. He came from California. His brothers Derek and Dillion came too. They are older and they are supposed to be working the oil fields with their Dad. They speed around town, yell, whistle and scare people. Sheriff Richards is constantly chasing them down in his patrol car. Mom says I need to be careful around them.
Daniel is in my grade at school. He is quiet and keeps to himself. I was having a hard day, so I decided to walk to the Pit for lunch. It’s the hang out for us kids. It is attached to the school property. As I was walking Daniel ran up and asked if he could go. I said sure. We were walking on the dirt parking lot that separated the Pit from the school. When out of nowhere Daniel’s brothers showed up in their old ford truck. They started driving circles around us stirring up dust and giving Daniel a hard time. He protected me best he could. They finally left.
I guess, I know now what my mom was trying to tell me. Derek and Dillion are crazy. If they had tried to hurt me, I’m not sure Daniel could protect me.
Guess my lesson in this would be, if a parent gives you a warning you should listen. Now because of Derek and Dillion we all have to be on our guard in town. I used to not be afraid in Rhinehart, now I’m uneasy. I lean on God to protect us. I also pray God will give me wisdom to not wind up in a situation where I could get hurt. Guess nothing stays the same.
